I took this knife to a professional knife sharpener that I know, and he said that this knife had such a perfect "japanese" factory edge on it, that he didn't need to mess with it. He also said that it is one of the nicest knines that he has ever seen. The particular edge that the knife has is perfect for cutting fish and and other types of meats. Probably not so good for chopping wood, but you could if you wanted to. The tang of the knife is solid and can be used as an axe for small logs in an emergency.
